Beach Scene by Worthington Whittredge
Worthington Whittredge was part of the second generation of Hudson River School painters. He was a close friend of fellow artists John Frederick Kensett and Sanford Gifford. Whittredge and William Trost Richards are the two Hudson River School artists most closely associated with Rhode Island. Whittredge’s beach scenes like this one, Home by the Sea, 1872, Addison Gallery, Andover and the National Gallery’s Second Beach, Newport, 1878-80 are iconic and desirable.
