31.6 dwtsDuring the 1970's tiger's eye and gold long chains were very fashionable. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in jewelry from the 1970's. The combination is iconic with Kutchinsky, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels all creating versions. VCA's very collectible Alhambra Tiger's Eye and Gold chain retails in the $15,000 range.
The nice weight of this necklace and its' length make it a wonderful addition to any jewelry collection. It can be worn as a long necklace but also doubled up. This Staal creation works well with a simple summer dress, a cashmere sweater or a suit. It is a versatile piece.
Staal Jewelers was established in New York City by Flora Staal Hartog (1903-1990) in 1940, a short time after she fled the Nazi's arrival in her native Amsterdam. Her father, Abraham Staal had been a well-known antiques dealer in that city. Initially Flora sold china and silver but transitioned to handling only jewelry. Like Tiffany and other prominent jewelers, Staal commissioned pieces in Italy for her Fifth Avenue jewelry store.
