During the 1970's tiger's eye and gold long chains were very fashionable. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in jewelry from the 1970's. Staal Jewelers was established in New York City by Flora Staal Hartog (1903-1990) in 1940, a short time after she fled the Nazi's arrival in her native Amsterdam. Her father, Abraham Staal had been a well-known antiques dealer in that city. Initially Flora sold china and silver but transitioned to handling only jewelry. Like Tiffany and other prominent jewelers, Staal commissioned pieces in Italy for her Fifth Avenue jewelry store.
