Jane Freilicher was active in the New York art world since studying with Hans Hofman in the 1940’s. Her work is a synthesis of Bonnard’s Post-Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. Like contemporaries Wolf Kahn and Fairfield Porter, her work is grounded in representation and realism. Freilicher’s circle of friends included many of the great artists and writers of the 20th century including John Ashbery, Nell Blaine, Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Wolf Kahn, Alex Katz, Joan Mitchell, Frank O’Hara, Fairfield Porter and Larry Rivers. Freilicher’s paintings and prints are all deeply personal. She painted her surroundings – the landscapes near her home in Water Mill, Long Island or the cityscapes of New York.
