The painting is in a beautiful carved and gilded 18th century French frame.

Jane Freilicher was active in the New York art world from the time she began her studies with Hans Hofmann in the 1940's. Her work is a synthesis of Bonnard's Post-Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. Like contemporaries Wolf Kahn and Fairfield Porter, her work was grounded in representation and realism. Freilicher's circle of friends included many of the great artists and writers of the 20th century such as John Ashbery, Nell Blaine, Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Wolf Kahn, Alex Katz, Joan Mitchell, Frank O'Hara, Fairfield Porter and Larry Rivers.

Freilicher's paintings are all deeply personal. She painted her surroundings - the landscapes near her home in Water Mill, Long Island or the views from her apartment on the West Side of New York City. Her still lives are lovely. Phlox from 1964 ranks among her best. The colors, brushwork and ethereal sensibility of Phlox make this sublime painting equal to French Impressionist Edouard Manet's floral still lives.
