Buccellati Jewelry has a signature style. Influenced by Italian Gothic and Renaissance Architecture, many Buccellati pieces feature "fretwork" on them. The delicate, lace-like surround on these square earrings mimics decorative elements found on Venetian palaces and the tracery of Rose windows in Gothic Cathedrals.
The Buccellati firm was founded in 1919 by Mario Buccellati in Milan, Italy. In addition to stores in Milan, Venice and Florence, Mario also opened shops in New York City and Palm Beach, Florida. In 1967 his son, Gianmaria Buccellati, succeeded him and expanded the firm's international footprint with boutiques in Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Moscow, Paris, Sydney and Tokyo. Like his father before him, Gianmaria insisted that all work was executed under his artistic direction. In addition to taking inspiration from Italian Gothic and Renaissance Architecture, the natural world including flowers, plants and trees feature prominently in Buccellati designs as does the Venetian lace which informs the firms uniique "tulle" work.
