Clay + Gold: Art, Sculpture & Jewelry: the exhibition features work by Maryalice Huggins and sculptural gold jewelry c. 1940-1980

We are delighted to announce our upcoming exhibition CLAY + GOLD at the gallery. Opening Night is Friday, September 22nd from 6-8 pm. This is the gallery’s second exhibition of Maryalice Huggins’s art. The work, much of it in clay, expresses her interest in the passage of time through sculpture. Altered and vanished forms of life are reoccurring themes in her work. As a multi-media artist, she explores the consequences of climate change in the natural world as well as its’ effect on lost civilizations throughout history.

Clay slabs are manipulated into loose, twisted, bulging, collapsing and flattened shapes, suggestive of fossils, bones and bleached ocean coral. Brightly painted elongated plant-like forms represent the verdant world we need to preserve for our existence and survival.

The earliest art forms were created using clay and gold. The pairing of these two materials in the exhibition is deeply satisfying and pieces converse freely with one another. Huggins uses a variety of 12 and 23 karat golds in her sculptures and manipulates paper and clay to create her pieces. Jewelers like Buccellati, Bulgari, Lalaounis and the French maker of the Art Deco “Cleopatra” necklace looked to ancient designs and nature to create timeless 18K gold bracelets, necklaces and rings. The pieces torque, twist and bend to catch light and adorn the wearer.
