Stephen Westfall's work is influenced by Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol Lewitt and the Hard Edge Abstraction of California's John McLaughlin. Since coming to New York City after receiving his MFA from UC Santa Barbara, Westfall has worked to articulate his own unique form of Geometric Abstraction.

El Norte, painted in 2006, is done in a colorful, rectilinear, flat, hard-edged style offset by expanses of white. The cubed format - squares within a square - add a twist. Perhaps inspired by Mondrian's iconic Boogie Woogie Broadway, the skewed irregularity of the cube pattern engages the viewer.

Westfall has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. His work is found in many museum collections including Louisiana Museum in Denmark, the Baltimore Museum, the Munson Proctor Williams and the Whitney Museum. He is the recipient of numerous awards, teaches at Rutgers and Bard and writes for Art in America.
