Stephen Westfall's work is influenced by Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol Lewitt and the Hard Edge Abstraction of California's John McLaughlin. Since coming to New York City after receiving his MFA from UC Santa Barbara, Westfall has worked to articulate his own unique form of Geometric Abstraction.
Westfall has exhibited widely and his work is found in many museum collections, including the Baltimore Museum, MFA Boston and The Whitney. A recipient of numerous awards he teaches at Rutgers and Bard, and writes for Art in America.
Earlier this year Perasma I & II and Dappleganger, large frieze-like wall paintings on laminated glass, were installed at the MTA's 30th Avenue Station in Astoria, Queens, New York. The installation has won popular and critical acclaim.
Tabernacle is a quietly beautiful work. Its simplicity has an almost mystical quality. The title is thought-provoking. Is there a biblical allusion or is it a stack of books?
